Boston Edison customers will soon be some of the first in the nation to have the opportunity to choose who generates their electricity. But what exactly does that mean for you? How does it work? What is an electricity supplier? We know you have many questions. That’s why Boston Edison is providing the following information. Even though all of the details have yet to be worked out, this brochure is part of our commitment to keeping you informed along the way.
Working together with the State Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Energy Resources, Boston Edison has created an industry restructuring plan. When this plan is implemented highlights will include savings for all of our customers and the opportunity for all customers to choose their electricity supplier.
Electricity suppliers are local, national and international companies that generate or offer power for sale. They may also be called generators, power marketers, or aggregators. You will be able to choose the company that provides your power. Boston Edison will continue to deliver that power to your home or business and will also continue to provide customer services such as billing, metering and outage reporting. Boston Edison and the Department of Public Utilities will make available a list of registered Electric Suppliers for Massachusetts when industry restructuring is implemented. You may possibly need to provide some information to an electricity supplier, such as your Boston Edison account number, your usage history or your rate code.
Boston Edison will continue to supply electricity to customers who do not select an Electricity Supplier. Charges associated with an electricity supplier will appear in the Supplier Services section of your bill.
Where do I turn for more information?
Boston Edison will continue to keep customers informed through educational brochures like this, advertisements, bill inserts and our web site (www.bedison.com). In addition, Boston Edison representatives are available to speak about industry restructuring with our communities and business customers. If you belong to a community or business organization within the Boston Edison service territory that would be interested in a presentation, please contact us at (617) 424-3456. Also, as competition arrives, Electricity Suppliers are likely to increase their marketing programs.
Since pricing for electricity generation will be established by the market you will have the opportunity to "shop around" for the best price for electricity generation, much like customers can shop around for long distance telephone service.
Most likely in the early part of 1998. Be assured that Boston Edison is working closely with government officials to expedite the process and ensure a smooth transition.
Initially at least 10%, but in the long term savings are likely to grow as the benefits of competition are realized.
Today all aspects of your electric service are provided by Boston Edison.
